Hallo allemaal

Lees hieronder mijn review van “Het vorige meisje” van J.P. Delaney.

Het vorige meisje gaat over twee vrouwen in twee verschillende tijdlijnen, Emma en Jane, die na een traumatische gebeurtenis op zoek gaan naar een nieuw begin en dus een nieuwe woonst. Via een makelaar krijgen ze het huis op Folgate Street I aangeboden. Beide vrouwen worden meteen verliefd op het huis. Maar het huis wordt niet zomaar aan eender wie te huur aangeboden. De architect van het huis vraagt hen om een vragenlijst in te vullen, en ze moeten zich schikken naar zo’n 200 regels die door de architect worden opgelegd. Geen probleem, vinden de dames. Maar daarna gebeuren er steeds vreemdere dingen. Emma, de vorige huurster, komt op een vreemde manier op haar einde. Jane ontdekt dit, en probeert de waarheid te achterhalen. Maar onbewust volgt ze dezelfde stappen en beslissingen als Emma.

Zowel de tekst op de achterkant, als de ondertitel “Alles wat van jou is, was eerst van haar” klonk meteen heel erg spannend. Het gaat om het debuut van J.P. Delaney, maar ik was meteen verkocht. Meteen toen ik het boek opendeed, werd ik in het verhaal gezogen. Het verhaal begint quasi direct met twee verschillende tijdlijnen en vertelpunten, namelijk die van Emma (toen) en die van Jane (nu). Dat werkt helemaal niet vervelend, en ik vind dat dit het verhaal juist een extra dimensie geeft. Je kan je beter inleven in het verhaal.

Het boek werd met vaak korte hoofdstukken geschreven, maar ook dat is helemaal niet storend. Het is juist handig, zeker als je ’s avonds in bed een goed boek wilt lezen en je moe bent. Maar opgelet, sommige stukken zijn soms ook een beetje zwaarder (psychologisch), en dan kan het al eens moeilijk te vatten zijn. Dan kun je best de volgende dag even fris verder lezen. Gelukkig is dit niet heel vaak!

Soms wordt op het einde van een hoofdstuk ook een inkijk in de vragenlijst gegeven, wat ook een leuk gegeven is. En ja, ik moest er onwillekeurig toch over nadenken. Wat is een goed en wat is een fout antwoord? Hoe zou jij reageren? Wat zou jij doen? Het is een leuke insteek!

Daarnaast wordt ook de hedendaagse technologie erin verwerkt en welke impact dit zo’n beetje op ons kan hebben/heeft. Wel

Het boek was zeer moeilijk weg te leggen, ik ben vaak met het boek naast mij in slaap gevallen (ah ja, moeilijk weg te leggen, zie je?  )

Ik vond het dus een prachtig debuut, goed geschreven, en wou telkens verder lezen. Het is beklijvend spannend en doet je nadenken over dingen. Het is een psychologische thriller. En dat is het soort boeken dat ik graag lees.

Dit boek verdient 4,5 sterren!

Ondertussen heb ik vernomen dat Universal een filmadaptatie van het boek wil maken, geregisseerd door Ron Howard (Apollo 13, The Da Vinci Code, Rush). Ik kijk er alvast naar uit, want Ron Howard maakt geweldige films! Maar, het is altijd beter om eerst het boek te lezen natuurlijk!
