Recensie: Boek: Opstand van Veronica Roth

In het voorjaar ben ik naar de film “Insurgent” gaan kijken in de Divergent-reeks. Deze film vond ik geweldig, maar her en der hoorde ik in boekengroepen op Facebook reacties en kreten als “Wat hebben ze in godsnaam met het boek gedaan???”

Aangezien ik het op dat moment te druk had om te lezen, en nog enkele andere boeken eerst wou lezen, heb ik pas in september tijd gehad om dat beruchte boek eindelijk te lezen.

Het verhaal: Tris, Tobias, Peter, Caleb en Marcus zijn gevlucht naar de Factie vriendschap, nadat Jeannine Matthews een simulatie had opgewekt bij Onverschrokkenheid, en zo de factie Zelfverloochening probeerde uit te roeien. Schuldgevoelens overmannen Tris, maar echt veel tijd om daarover na te denken, krijgt ze niet. Onverschrokkenheid is verdeeld in twee kampen en een van hen troept samen met Eruditie. Bovendien zijn ze ook op zoek naar Afwijkenden. Needless to say dat ze dus lijnrecht tegenover elkaar staan. Andere facties proberen zo min mogelijk tussen de twee vuren in te staan, en Tris en Tobias zullen dus moeten vechten voor wat hen lief is.

Eerst en vooral, je mag het boek en de film absoluut NIET vergelijken met elkaar. Als je dat doet, vind je óf de film flauw (dat waren de meeste reacties), óf het boek. Ik vond de film en het boek beiden goed.

Ja, er gebeuren compleet andere dingen in het boek en in de film. Ik vond het boek precies ook meer een verhaal vertellen en begrijp dankzij het boek wel beter waarom ze nu op zoek gaan naar een andere wereld, terwijl in de film, en dan vooral in de trailer, gefocust werd op een soort angstlandschap, die naar mijn gevoel de hele trailer en film beheerste. Ook om tot hetzelfde eindverhaal te komen, dus in dat opzicht zat de film ook wel goed in elkaar.

Maar in het boek heerste meer actie, ruzies, plottwists die je niet zag aankomen, het samentroepen van de groepen/facties om te vechten waarvoor ze staan, willen staan, de verdeeldheid die er heerst, hoe deze groepen vechten voor waarin ze geloven, …

Net als het boek “Inwijding” (Divergent 1), leest dit boek heerlijk vlot weg, en voor je het weet ben je “hooked”. Hoewel ik graag vlug in het derde boek “Opstand” wil beginnen, wil ik eerst nog een paar andere boeken lezen. Maar het is zeker de bedoeling om het boek te lezen vóór de derde en vierde film van Divergent uitkomen (“Allegiant” (2016) en “Ascendant” (2017)).

Wat volgens mij de juiste volgorde is om het boek te lezen, vóór of na de film “Insurgent”? Dat kan alleen jij bepalen. Ik ben persoonlijk wel blij dat ik eerst de film heb gezien, en erna pas het boek heb gelezen, want anders zou ik me waarschijnlijk net zo druk hebben gemaakt dat het boek compleet veranderd werd voor de film. Máár, als je het boek naderhand leest, begrijp je andere dingen uit de film wel weer beter.

Zowel het boek als de film zijn dus zeker allebei aanraders, maar alsjeblieft, zie ze los van elkaar.
